Burn Ban and Low Water Advisory Continue Despite Recent Rain

Although the region received some rainfall recently, it was not enough to reduce the risk of fire or improve water supply conditions. The total burn ban and Level 2 Low Water Advisory remain in effect for Edwardsburgh Cardinal and surrounding areas.

Total Burn Ban

Outdoor cooking devices such as gas, electric, or charcoal grills, wood-fired ovens, or smokers are permitted only for cooking. They must be fully extinguished immediately after food preparation.

All open-air burning that requires a permit remains prohibited. This includes:

  • Campfires
  • Burn barrels
  • Burning brush, grass, or leaves
  • Fireworks

These restrictions are in place to reduce the risk of wildfires during hot, dry conditions. Even small sparks can cause fires to spread quickly when vegetation is dry. The fire department monitors conditions daily and will lift the ban when it is safe to do so.

Level 2 Low Water Advisory

On August 11, South Nation Conservation has raised its Low Water Advisory to Level 2 (Moderate). Minor water supply issues have been observed across the watershed.

A Level 2 advisory asks all water users to reduce non-essential use by 20%. This includes:

  • Limiting lawn watering and car washing
  • Postponing power washing and filling pools
  • Reducing outdoor irrigation where possible

If you rely on a private well, agriculture, or other private water sources, conservation is especially important to help protect supply.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice. South Nation Conservation will continue to monitor rainfall, stream flows, and water levels across the region.

You can read the current advisory.

How You Can Help

Small changes in your daily routine can make a difference:

  • Water gardens early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor plants.
  • Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of hosing them down.

By working together to conserve water and prevent fires, we can help protect our community and environment during these dry summer conditions.
