Burn Ban and Water Advisory Update

Update September 29, 2025 - Burn restrictions remain in place as dry conditions continue

The Township continues to monitor conditions closely and remains hopeful for rain. However, with no significant precipitation in the forecast, current burn restrictions must stay in place.

Two main factors are preventing any relaxation of the rules:

  • The ongoing Level 3 drought has reduced access to usual water sources.
  • Extremely dry vegetation, including corn and bean fields, increases the risk of fire spreading quickly.

These conditions make fire response more difficult and raise the overall risk of wildfires. For everyone’s safety, residents are asked to continue exercising caution.

Edwardsburgh Cardinal is under Fire Risk Level 3, which permits campfires, in time for the long weekend. South Nation Conservation has also raised its Low Water Advisory to Level 3, urging residents to reduce non-essential water use.

Fire Risk Update – Level 3 (High)

Under Fire Risk Level 3, campfires are allowed only with a valid, activated burn permit and must follow all permit conditions.

Campfires can be:

  • no larger than 0.6 m (2 ft)
  • contained within a non-combustible ring at least 15 cm (6 in) high
  • kept 6 m (20 ft) away from buildings, fences, wooded areas, property lines, or hydro/telephone lines

Only seasoned firewood may be used, and fires must be fully extinguished with plenty of water before leaving.

What is not permitted:

  • burn barrels
  • brush piles
  • agricultural fires
  • yard waste burning

The fire department continues to monitor conditions. Check for updates at ec.burnpermits.com.

SNC Declares a Level 3 (Severe) Low Water Advisory

Earlier this week, South Nation Conservation’s Water Response Team declared a Level 3 Low Water Advisory for the South Nation Conservation Jurisdiction.

Level 3 conditions indicate that water supply no longer meets demand in certain regions and ongoing drought conditions are putting increased pressure on surface and groundwater supplies. Under this advisory, all water users are asked to reduce water use and suspend non-essential water use until natural supplies begin to recover.

Working Together

By following burn restrictions and cutting back on non-essential water use, residents can help protect both community safety and our shared water supply during this period of dry conditions.
