Pool admission standards

Safety is our top priority, especially for children. We follow the Ontario Public Pools Regulation (2018) and guidelines from the Lifesaving Society of Ontario. These rules are in place to prevent accidents and save lives.

Swim tests are required

Every swimmer must complete a swim test before swimming in the deep end. If a swimmer passes, they do not need to retake the test for the rest of the season at that pool.

Because our pools in Cardinal and Johnstown are different widths, swim tests must be completed at each location.

Swim skills can improve! If you or your child become a stronger swimmer, retesting is available throughout the season. Ask staff at any time.

To swim in the deep end without a lifejacket, everyone must pass a swim test. This involves:

  1. Swimming two widths of the pool without stopping or touching the bottom or sides
  2. Showing confidence and control (no panic or struggling, no fear of splashing, or water on face)
  3. Finishing the swim calm and able to speak with the guard
  4. You only need to pass the swim test once at each pool per season

Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of everyone, but they can’t supervise every child individually. Direct supervision by a responsible adult or competent swimmer significantly reduces the risk of drowning or emergencies.

Children under 6 years old:

  • Must be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian at all times.
  • Ratio: 2 children per adult

Children 6 to 9 years old:

  • Pass swim test: May swim independently
  • Do not pass: Must be within arm’s reach of a competent swimmer (age 12+); Ratio: 4:1

Everyone 10 years and older:

  • Pass swim test: May swim independently
  • Do not pass: Must wear a lifejacket in the deep end or remain in the shallow area

Our commitment to you

  • Certified staff are trained to spot risk and respond fast.

  • We work hard to create a safe and welcoming experience.

  • We’re here to help your family enjoy the water with confidence.

Respect our team

Harassment, yelling, or aggressive behaviour toward staff will not be tolerated. Our staff are here to keep everyone safe, and the Township supports them in enforcing these safety rules.

Need help?

If you have questions about swim tests or how to help your child build water confidence, please speak with our aquatic supervisor. We’re happy to support you.
