Vandalism and Break-In at Waterfront Canteen

The Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal is advising residents that the Waterfront Canteen and public washroom facilities were broken into and significantly vandalized during the early morning hours of September 3, 2026.

Township staff attended the site following notification of the incident and immediately contacted the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Significant damage was sustained to both the men’s and women’s washrooms, a canteen window, and several recently installed security cameras.

Security footage and other evidence collected from the site have been provided to the OPP as part of its investigation. Damaged security cameras are being replaced, and the Township is taking immediate steps to secure the facility and restore public amenities.

Due to the extent of the damage, the public washrooms will remain temporarily unavailable. Portable washroom facilities have been arranged while repairs are assessed and completed and will be delivered Friday morning.

The Township would also like to assure residents that the Cardinal Labor Fest activities scheduled for this weekend will continue as planned. Township staff are working to ensure the waterfront area and all required amenities are ready for the weekend’s events.

The Township is extremely disappointed by this senseless damage to community facilities. These spaces are provided for the enjoyment of residents and visitors, and acts of vandalism ultimately result in costs and disruption for the entire community.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who has information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the OPP.

The Township thanks residents for their patience while staff work to restore the affected facilities.
